A few weeks ago, Jeff Elliott discussed digital transformation and how that could impact your organization in 2017.  Digital transformation and key areas that accompany it were all topics at Gartner's CIO forum this past week.  My key takeaways from this year's CIO event include identifying the current trends for public sector/government to support digital evolution, and as a leader how to successfully navigate digital transformation in an organization.

What are current trends for digital environments?  My first question is always how does IT align with and support the business?  According to Gartner, “Key government business trends include items such as citizen experience management, a data driven workforce, and institutional agility.”  The City of Aurora has efforts underway in each of these areas.

What Will Digital Transformation Mean to Your Organization in 2017?

Posted by Jeff Elliott on 2/23/17 1:40 PM

In 2016, the world of business witnessed huge innovations and technological advancements in digital transformation. For starters, the internet of things (IoT) was further developed and we saw organizations demonstrate creativity in the solutions they devised. From sensors to energy grids, many private and even public sector organizations utilized IoT in order to become “smarter.” Looking ahead, Oxford Economics estimates that just over $1 trillion (USD) will be spent in the global IoT market by 2019.

Business leaders also continued to further explore the relationship between data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, in their 2017 Tech Trends publication, Deloitte predicts that the digital universe is expected to increase in size. Data space as large as 44 zettabytes – where one zettabyte is equal to one billion terabytes – will be common space. It does not stop here!

Education Reimagined: The Impact of Technology on Education Transformation

Posted by Amy Fowler Stadler on 7/18/16 2:00 PM

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the annual ISTE conference in Denver along with 16,000 other practitioners, numerous sponsors, many entrepreneurs, and innovators, and an impressive set of vendor booths. Whether you are in this space, in the education system, or not, this is a must read! I had not been to this event before, and I was reminded of the amazing buzz you have when that many educational leaders and innovators are together in one place! Not only did it give me a chance to meet one-on-one with customers in a casual setting, but I spent time with entrepreneurs and practitioners (aka teachers, principals and administrative support) talking about what is needed to transform Education with IT from many aspects. It was clear to me that Lewis Fowler should be part of the solution of the future around transforming education. Below outlines my insights from the event, and key messages that really resonated with me.

Creating a Culture of Variance Explanation

This series of posts has identified numerous leadership traps in the form of common misuses or misunderstandings of metrics.  In this post I’d like to touch on the power that can be harnessed within your teams by avoiding these traps and creating a culture of variance explanation.

Let’s start by thinking about how performance review meetings typically work.  Imagine a group of people talking about the performance of a given process or function.  On a big screen is a hot mess of a metrics dashboard.  Very few (if any) people understand how the metrics are calculated, if or how they relate to each other, or if they actually measure the performance of the process against its goals.

People assume they know what a metric means simply from its name.
